Pune vs Mumbai: What is the difference?

As far as hot topics go, ‘Pune vs Mumbai’ probably goes the farthest. But that’s not a big, big surprise. After all, there’s only a thin line – and a 152 km long expressway – that separates the two cities. Now, as much as we love Bombay, today we’re here to make a case for why Pune might be a better city than Mumbai, all things considered.

9 Reasons Why Pune Is A Better City Than Mumbai

So sorry, Mumbaikars, you might win the ‘Pune vs Mumbai city’ battle just in terms of charm. But there are other criteria’s for which Pune might take the trophy home. Read on to find out.

1. Climate

Who likes to sweat like a pig? Well, not Punekars for sure. Coz Pune boasts of a moderate climate throughout the year. Unlike Mumbai’s hot and humid weather that’s enough to drive anyone insane.

While Pune’s temperature ranges from 10-25 degrees Celsius during winter, Mumbai’s winter season is nothing short of a sauna, with temperatures ranging from 15-30 degrees Celsius. So objectively, Pune has a more ideal climate than Mumbai. Sorry, Mumbaikars, but it looks like someone is ummm, well, already sweating in this heated debate.

2. Cost of Living

Mumbai may be the financial capital of India, but it comes at a hefty price. Punekars, on the other hand, live the dream life without breaking the bank. From lower rental rates to affordable food and transportation expenses, Pune is a budget-friendly city that won’t leave a dent in your wallet. Plus, you get bigger apartments too. Ok, sorry Mumbaikars, that last bit was a bit harsh. Even if it is true.

3. Traffic

Ever get stuck in traffic for hours? Mumbai’s narrow and congested roads are a nightmare for commuters, making navigating the city a real pain. On the other hand, Pune has well-planned roads and wider streets, reducing traffic congestion. With an efficient public transport system, a well-connected bus network, and a growing metro network, Punekars can easily zip around town. No offense to Mumbai tho, we get that you always had too much on your plate. And you’re always trying to improve this. So we’ll cut you some slack.

4. Education

Pune is not just a cultural hub but boasts some of the best colleges and universities in the country. From the prestigious Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) to the renowned Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune offers diverse educational opportunities. Although, to be fair, Mumbai isn’t too far behind on educational opportunities either. So there’s that.

5. Music festivals

At first glance, you might think that Mumbai has a lot more events happening every other day. And you’re not wrong. But when it comes to music concerts and festivals, Pune has a lot more to offer. Thanks to the likes of Vh1 Supersonic, NH7 weekender, and the Sunburn festival. And not to mention, the thriving local Indie music scene.

6. Proximity to Western Ghats

Another crucial point to add in the answer to ‘Pune vs Mumbai, which is better?’ is Pune’s proximity to weekend getaways. For starters, it’s closer to Goa. And even closer to the Western Ghats. And we all know the number of destinations located in the Western Ghats alone. Basically, when it comes to taking a break, Pune has a lot more going for itself.

7. Greenery

Who doesn’t love a bit of greenery? Pune is surrounded by beautiful hills and has several parks and gardens. Including the beautiful Empress Garden and the sprawling Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park. In comparison, Mumbai has limited green spaces. Now, that’s a good reason to turn ‘green’ with envy, innit? Ok, let’s just forget we made that pun.

8. Thriving IT sector

Sure, Mumbai is the financial capital of the country, but when it comes to the IT sector, Pune has the upper hand. In fact, there are more IT parks in Pune than Mumbai has movie studios. Okay, we’re not really sure about that statistic , but you get the point, don’t you?

9. Lifestyle

Pune is a city that strikes the perfect balance between work and play. Unlike Mumbai’s fast-paced lifestyle, Pune knows how to take it easy and enjoy life’s most simple pleasures. From weekend getaways to the nearby hill stations of Lonavala and Khandala to cultural festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali, Pune has a vibrant and diverse lifestyle that offers something for everyone.

So even after reading this, if you think Mumbai is the better city to live in, then you’re probably right too. Because let’s admit it, our love for a city is not always based on statistics. Sometimes, it’s also about that one cozy cafe you keep going to, or just the circle of friends that you found in that city. So no hard feelings.
