Yep, whether you’re looking for flats or a single room for rent, negotiating on the rent alone isn’t enough. You’ve got to ask, pester, and double-check about all the amenities and costs that are covered under the rent. For example, your rent might seem low to you at first. But when that extra society fee and the extra water bill comes knocking, you’re gonna wish you had checked these hidden costs earlier. It’s kinda like when you pick up that new dope-looking skincare lotion from the shopping aisle and realise its heavy price tag only when it comes printed in the bill. Surprise, surprise.
How much is it? And how many months’ deposit in total? What are the terms of getting the security deposit back? And will I be penalized for changing up the interiors? Well, these are some of the sureshot questions you must ask your landlord. And you might not realise it now, but when you leave the flat for another, you’re gonna need the deposit back to fund your packing and moving charges, yk. So don’t hesitate to ask your landlord questions. Like your neighbourhood auntie never hesitates to ask you plenty when you drop down from your friend’s car after a party.
First things first, if it’s an independent rented apartment, you shouldn’t be bothered about entertaining any guest policies. But in case the apartment happens to be in a managed society or a hostel, then guest policies are important to note. Either way, make sure you talk to your landlord about it beforehand. Cause you’d not want your friend who’s visiting from your hometown to put up in a hotel when you could be partying at your place. Or worse, make em sneak into your apartment unnoticed while pretending to be secret military operatives. Sure, that sounds exciting, but grow up?
The last thing you want – when you’re trying to live independently for the first time – are unnecessary and totally uncalled for restrictions on your stay. Especially when you were ‘presented’ with an independent apartment and surprised with these bummers later. And btw, that includes enquiring about the pet policies too. Because you may not have moved in with a pet, but 3-4 months of surviving in a concrete jungle might just make you wish for a cute pup licking your chin. So think about it.
Moving into budget-friendly rooms for rent might often mean moving into ones that need constant repair. The electric socket coming out of the wall. The need for a plastic roof that stops the rainwater from clogging your balcony. And door handles that are missing a screw or two. In those cases and plenty others, you’ll need to have a clear cut agreement with your landlord about the repair costs. Otherwise, you’ll end up fixing their apartment out of your own pocket. And we’re not sure if your wallet would like you for that (not that it likes you even now, thanks to your bite-size investments to food delivery unicorns).
