The top engineering colleges in India admit the smartest students; some pursue years of research after their B.Tech while others go on to not work in, some of the best IT companies in India. These students who get to study in the best engineering colleges in India go through a process of boot camp level preparation classes, mock exams, and then the actual competitive entrance tests. And no process is as hard as the one that leads you to one of the IITs.
So, no surprise that, to date, all but one of the top 10 engineering colleges in India are the Indian Institutes of Technology. So if you live under a rock and still don’t understand why this country is obsessed with getting into the IITs, that’s why.

Is it a surprise that the best engineering college in India also has the best placement record? Every placement season, top MNCs from India – and from outside its borders too – book a trip to their campus to hire some of the best brains from the Computer Science, Mechanical and Aeronautical engineering departments. And the packages they offer go north of $1,50,000!!! We’re still trying to figure out how much that is in rupees. That’s probably why we never made it to IIT Madras.
IIT Delhi has a diverse range of alumni, all famous in their own fields. Take Kiran Bedi (India’s first female IPS officer), Raghuram Rajan (Chief Economic Adviser to the PM) or Sachin Bansal (Founder of Flipkart). Or the man that needs no introduction – Chetan Bhagat. Although according to him, survival in IITD was not easy. But he did go on to make crores writing a bestseller on it. Either way, it pays to pass the gates of IITD.
IIT Bombay is obviously one of the best b-tech colleges in India, for its campus and the groundbreaking research by its students and professors. But it is also known for hosting Asia’s largest cultural festival – ‘Mood Indigo’ – every year in December, for four days around Christmas. Students from colleges all over India go there to participate. Even more go there for their concerts. You could even call it our very own version of Tomorrowland.
IIT Kanpur is one of the top engineering colleges in India for a reason. It has much more than the regular facilities that students need. Like their very own airstrip for the students from Aeronautical Engineering to try their projects on. Looks like IIT Kanpur was Aatmanirbhar before it became cool.
Did you know that IIT Kharagpur has a building named Bomb House? Don’t be scared, the name is because this structure was used to store bombs by the British during World War. Now it’s a staff quarter. The name still makes sense because the bombs these teachers drop on students (aka class tests and assignments), are designed here itself.
IIT Roorkee is definitely one of the top 10 engineering colleges in India. The proof is that students from more than 50 countries seek admission to IIT Roorkee each year. The college also has an internet speed that’s almost 6 times of India’s? So if you ever need a movie to be downloaded, it’ll help to have a friend from IIT Roorkee.
IIT Guwahati has the prettiest campus among all other IITs (we’re talking mountains and lakes). They also have a pretty strict policy of not letting any company hire from the college if it doesn’t have an office in India. This policy is unique to IIT Guwahati and is maintained to ensure that there’s no brain drain. They have taken the #Vocal4Local campaign pretty seriously, giving the big corps a hard time.
Researchers of IIT-H have successfully used AI to detect the use of mobile phones by people when driving. This was made to understand and reduce road accidents that occur when the driver is distracted by their text notifications. This algorithm can also help you track your lost mobile phones. So if you ever touch your pocket and can’t feel your phone, remember, it’s not the end of the world.
The only NIT in the list of top 10 engineering colleges in India is also known as NIT Trichy. Their students not just study or do their research, they take part in almost all areas of the college. For instance, their computing club, Delta Force, is in charge of the college website and the super-important LAN system. So besides having some of the best engineers, NIT Trichy is also the breeding ground for the best COD players.
Although a newer college, IIT Indore has really versatile departments. From Paradigm Shift – a club from the CSE department – being ranked 1st in India and 42nd globally. To students from the robotics and aeronautical engineering department working on projects in NASA and CERN. Looks like IIT-I is taking India’s name not just to the world stage, but way beyond it.
No guesses here! The IITs are obviously the best engineering colleges in India, and not just according to NIRF. The order in which they are ranked is – Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur and Kharagpur.
Although all the IITs have their own specialities, IIT Madras takes the prize away when it comes to the best govt college of engineering in India.
For most colleges, you’d need to clear the JEE Main exam. However, some states also conduct their own state-level entrances.
BTech colleges in India, in general, have a fee structure between Rs 3-5 lakh. But if you do get into a top-tier college like one of the IITs, the return on investment will be more than satisfactory.
Although specialisations differ from college to college, most of the colleges of engineering in India offer these subjects – Electronics & Communication, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, Biochemical, and Computer Science Engineering.
