Difference Between A PG And A College Hostel

If you’re caught between choosing a paying guest accommodation and a college hostel, then sorry, bro. That’s a tough nut to crack. Because to be honest, it’s not as simple as black or white. It totally depends on the quality of your college facilities. And also how good the PG is in comparison to your hostel. If the hostel’s well and good, then why not move in? But in case it’s not, then okay, a PG may just be a better option.

Basic Differences Between a PG and a Hostel

Just scroll down below and you’ll see how the experience of living in a PG differs from a hostel:

Monthly fees

Well, this one’s obvious but also the most important thing to consider. More often than not, your hostel fees would be lesser than a paying guest house. Especially if it’s a government college. But in case the hostel beds have not been replaced since the college’s 150-year-old history. Or if the walls still carry the scribblings of long-dead seniors. Then maybe shifting to a PG may be a better option. Even if you have to pay extra, let’s say. P.S: no offense to your college’s legacy.

Amenities

When it comes to amenities, not many of them are offered in college hostels. At least, usually. Now, combine that with the fact that most hostel food is not very tasty either, you might as well opt for a good PG that offers more amenities and serves decent food. Or if we’re being honest, you could just move to a Stanza Living residence near your college. And not just enjoy lip-smacking meals but also enjoy the ability to customize them as per your needs. Just sayin’.

Commute

Now, let’s just address the elephant in the room. The reason why you’ll even consider a make-do hostel is this. It’ll be right inside your campus and probably just a stone’s throw away from your department building. So moving into the hostel is obviously a great advantage to have. Unless you don’t want to lose the chance to blame traffic for being late to class. But then again, if you find a PG that’s just 5 mins away from campus, that sorta evens out the deal.

Accountability

This is one of the major reasons why moving into a PG may be better. That’s because your PG owners will be more accountable to provide you better service than your hostel authorities ever will.

For example, you can simply complain about the food and if your landlord’s reasonable, they’ll change it asap. But in the case of your hostel, you first have to talk to your seniors. Then write a letter to the warden. Then wait for them to talk to the principal. And even after all that, you might be left disappointed. So it’s like your college behaving like that friend who always takes you for granted. Just coz they did you a favor once upon a time.
